The Nord Drum 2 Modeling Percussion Synthesizer utilizes real-time resonant, subtractive, and FM synthesis to emulate a wide range of different drum sounds. The unit features six channels, each with drive, crush, repeat, and EQ effects as well as six trigger inputs for controlling the synthesizer using acoustic drum triggers, contact microphones, or an electronic drum pad such as the 6-channel Nord Pad. You can also input a drum sequence using MIDI data from a MIDI-capable instrument, a DAW, or with Nord's included drum sequencer application Nord Beat for iPad.
The device generates sound in three sections. The first section controls tone and offers three synthesis modes. The resonant synthesis mode allows you to tune the harmonic spectra to create sounds inspired by materials such as drum heads, tines, cymbals, vibraphones, and marimbas. The subtractive synthesis mode utilizes saw, sine, square, and pulse waveforms to create electronic drum sounds and effects. The third mode uses frequency modulation synthesis mode and will be available with a future software update.
The second sound generation section controls noise and adds texture to your tone. You can shape the sound using low-pass, high-pass, and band-pass filters with resonance and cut-off controls. You can also control the attack envelope and attack rate to create anything from shaker to hand clap sounds. A decay control offers the choice of logarithmic, linear, and gated decays which can be linked to velocity using the unit's dynamic control.
The third sound generation section is designed to blend an ultra-fast click sound to your tone. A variety of different click sounds are available with level control for combining the click with the other elements of the sound. You can add distortion, EQ, and repeat effects to each of the six channels. For distortion you can apply an overdrive effect to make the sound vary from realistic to unrecognizable or apply a sample-rate reducing crush effect. The parametric equalizer enables selectable band adjustments for finely tuning your sound. The repeat effect produces a delay according to a global repeat tempo with repeat characteristics tailored to each channel.
The levels and panning position of all six channels can be individually adjusted using the unit's mixer. If you want to send different sounds, such as the kick drum, to different outputs you can do so by panning hard to the left or right and using the stereo output as two mono outputs. The sound creation and shaping controls enables a nearly unlimited range of creative possibilities.
