Communicate with your friends and family no matter where you are in the world with the inReach Explorer Satellite Communicator With Navigation from DeLorme. This communications device has a built in GPS, and can transmit anywhere in the world using the Iridium satellite network. This device can transmit an SOS signal to the GEOS International Emergency Rescue Coordination Center at the push of a button to summon help, and have a conversation detailing the nature of your emergency. In less dire situations you can send 160 character messages to loved ones, complete with your coordinates. There's no wondering if your message got through, as there is delivery confirmation. With this device they can also transmit messages to you. A subscription is required for use, and annual or month-to-month plans are available.
There are many navigation features included, such as a digital compass, barometric altimeter, and an accelerometer to track your speed. The odometer displays useful trip statistics such as trip time, max speed, moving average, and trip distance. You can set up a route when you're at your computer, and follow it when you are out in the field. The unit is IP67 rated to resist incidental water exposure, and can be submerged to 1 meter for up to a half hour. The rechargeable lithium polymer battery lasts up to 10 hours on a charge.
Utilizing the Bluetooth capabilities, you can pair the Explorer with your iOs or Android smartphone or tablet. This allows you to control and use the functions of your inReach right from your smartphone or tablet so it can be left in your pocket or bag. You can view routes, waypoints, or tracks with detailed topo maps or U.S. NOAA charts downloaded to your device while you are in the field. The digital compass includes detailed trip information such as speed, bearing, elevation and more. You can even sync up for direct access to your contacts, and post to social media.
Using the MapShare portal, friends and family can follow along on your journey. You can select who you want your followers to be, and choose your desired privacy settings. The rate that tracking data is sent is adjustable from 10 minutes to 4 hours. With an optional upgraded subscription, points can be sent in as little as 2 minutes. These points create clickable dots which display speed, course, and elevation.
