The Impact LX49 from Nektar is a 49 key, velocity-sensitive USB controller keyboard that provides an affordable yet fully featured solution for music makers. A major feature is the intelligent mapping, where the keyboard already comes pre-mapped and configured for most major DAWs.
The full-size, piano-style keys respond with a medium tension and are covered to protect against dirt and dust. Four velocity curves are available along with three fixed velocity levels for instances where consistent output is required. Octave and transpose buttons as well as pitch bend and modulation wheels are available.
Eight velocity sensitive pads are perfect for groove and beat creation. Each pad can be assigned any MIDI note number or MIDI CC message for use as MIDI trigger or toggle buttons. A "Pad Learn" feature allows you to select a pad, play the note or sound you want on the keyboard and assignment is done. Assignments are stored over power cycling and four map locations will store settings for recall.
Multiple modes for navigation are available allowing the user to switch between mixer, instrument, and preset views. Five preset memory locations are provided for storing custom setups. Further navigation options include track change, patch change, and a plug-in button that opens or closes the currently controlled plug-in window on the DAW's display.
In mixer mode the first eight faders are assigned to control eight channels of a DAW's mixer with the ability to shift among groups of eight channels. The ninth fader is always assigned to the currently selected channel. The buttons under the faders follow the channel assignment and can control mute or solo. Pan functionality is handled by the eight pots.
The instrument preset assigns all controls to instrument parameters once an instrument track is selected in a DAW. A typical control layout places amplifier and filter envelopes on the faders and the parameters that have the biggest impact on the sound, on the pots. This means you often have filter cutoff and resonance on pots 1 and 2 for example. A "grab" mode allows for custom control setups.
The included entry-level Studio One Artist DAW software is easy to use and offers unlimited tracks and plug-in instantiations, extensive use of drag-and-drop, in-depth editing features, and twenty native effects.
