The Turnkey Mac Pro Workstation with Avid Media Composer 8 and 8TB RAID Media Storage put together by B&H is designed for professional video editors and other digital content creation (DCC) professionals. The system is based on the Apple Mac Pro (Late 2013) and features Avid Media Composer 8, an 8TB RAID system, an editing keyboard, an Apple Magic Mouse, 3-Year Apple Care coverage for the tower, and 1-year of B&H tech support on the turnkey installation.
Driving this editing workstation is the Late 2013 model Mac Pro. The model featured has a 3.5 GHz Intel Xeon E5 six-core CPU, not one but two AMD FirePro D500 graphics cards with 3GB RAM each, 16GB of system RAM, and a 256GB PCIe-based flash drive to store the operating system and applications. Thanks to the accelerated architecture provided by the dual-GPU design, much of the processing effort associated with video editing, especially transcoding and rendering, can now be offloaded to one or both graphics cards. Additionally, six Thunderbolt 2 ports sharing three 20 Gb/s channels allow the connection of multiple high-resolution displays as well as high-performance mass storage devices, such as the included 8TB RAID.
Avid Media Composer 8 is a professional video editing application that, thanks the AMA (Avid Media Access), is able to support native editing of a wide range of popular codecs, including AVCHD and ProRes without transcoding. It also features advanced metadata support, especially when using MXF-wrapped media, such as Avid's own DNxHD codec. The MXF format allows all sorts of additional information, such as camera notes taken on set, to accompany the video file, storing it all in a unified container format. Additionally, Media Composer includes DVD authoring software and supports a number of third-party plugins. For the purposes of turnkey installation and testing the trial version will be installed. To active it you will need to use the Avid Media Composer 8 Activation Card included with this bundle.
For storage of video and other media content this bundle features an 8TB RAID system with Thunderbolt 2. By combining four drives in one system, the RAID can achieve significantly better performance than would be possible with a single drive system and also increases the storage space of a single logical volume. It can be configured as RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, or 10 though RAID 5 is generally the most popular for video editors at it provides one drive's worth of parity. This means one drive can fail without incurring data loss while retaining performance that is not that far behind RAID 0. Because one drive's worth of capacity is used for parity, in RAID 5 6TB will be free for data storage.
A shortcut keyboard is included so that you don't have to memorize every keyboard shortcut Media Composer offers. The keyboard is designed to retain the metallic aesthetics of an original Apple keyboard, and in addition to the Avid shortcuts, the keycaps retain their standard alphanumeric printing so you can use it for regular computing tasks, or typing screenplays, as well.
To help make mouse interaction more intuitive, the turnkey features the Apple Magic Mouse. The Magic Mouse can be thought of as a combination of a track pad and a traditional mouse. In lieu of buttons and scroll wheels the mouse features a touch-sensitive top surface that responds to multi-faceted hand gestures.
