The VX49 from Alesis is 49-key USB/MIDI keyboard controller that, aside from the usual controller functions, features a 4.3" full-color high-resolution display screen. The screen allows for directly interfacing with a DAW and virtual instrument plug-ins in a more intuitive way. The keys themselves are semi-weighted with aftertouch, and eight RGB-backlit velocity- and pressure-sensitive drum pads are arranged in four banks.
The full-color display instantly adapts itself to the selected plug-in controls, delivering one-to-one access to the instrument and many other various editable functions. Additional controls include 360-degree performance-ready knobs, eight dual-function switch pads, backlit and rubberized pitch and mod wheels, built-in "Roll Mode" and arpeggiator features, and more. Inputs are available for optional sustain and modulation pedals, and dedicated MIDI input and output connectors are included.
Using the included Virtual Instrument Player (VIP) software, the controller combines the creativity of software instruments with the live playability of a keyboard workstation. VIP works with any VSTi virtual instrument, including the seven VST plug-ins by SONiVOX and AIR Music Tech bundled with the keyboard. VIP also provides access to any virtual instrument with or without a DAW. An integrated patch browser presents every patch for every VST plug-in in a user's collection, and enables quick filtering, selection, and preview based on their specific attributes.
VIP software also allows for creating set lists that provide instant on-demand access to user-curated instruments for stage performance and studio work. Multiple patches can layered together (from up to eight different VST plug-ins) to create new patches and timbres.
