Have all of the versatility of the Android platform in a hand-held navigation device with the Monterra Handheld GPS from Garmin. This unit has multiple layers of wireless connectivity, including Bluetooth, WiFi, ANT+, and Near Field Communication, to communicate with multiple devices including tablets, smartphones, and other GPS units. Access to Google Play lets you utilize a variety of applications for everything from entertainment to stargazing. The built-in 8 megapixel camera with autofocus allows you to take your own geo-tagged pictures and 1080p/30fps video, complete with an LED flash. A 4" sunlight-readable touchscreen displays your position in an easy to read manner. You can choose between landscape and portrait modes for the best possible view of the map or data you are trying to interpret. An included world basemap features shaded relief to help make physical features stand out.
This unit utilizes both GPS and GLONASS satellites for quicker signal acquisition so you get a fix on your position approximately 20 times faster than GPS alone. The receiver also can interpret Wide Area Augmentation System (WAAS) signals so you can receive information from terrestrial antennas even when your view of the sky is obstructed. The WAAS system also provides greater position accuracy overall. The unit's built-in 3-axis tilt-compensated electronic compass shows your heading even while standing still, no matter how it is positioned. It also houses a barometric altimeter which tracks changes in pressure to pinpoint your precise altitude so you will know your distance from sea level.
MapMerge lets you combine 2 maps and view them in 3 dimensions providing greater detail. In addition to the worldwide basemap with shaded relief, you can use the microSD card slot to add TOPO 24K maps for hiking, Trailhead Series TOPO maps for famous trails, BlueChart g2 charts for boating, or City Navigator NT maps data for turn-by-turn routing on roads. Optional BirdsEye Satellite Imagery provides aerial photography to give a better idea of the land features on your route. Paperless geocaching software lets you download caches. It is compatible with custom maps, and permits you to add your own custom points of interest.
Rounding out the outdoor features, NOAA weather radio with SAME alerts keep you informed of changing weather conditions. The receiver can also pick up FM stations to provide entertainment, which can be played back through the built-in speaker or through the headphone jack. You can use the unit for area calculation to provide an idea of the size of a parcel of land. A built-in UV sensor interprets level of UV light so you know how many rays you are being exposed to. This unit can be run off the included rechargeable lithium-ion battery pack, or utilizing 3 AAA batteries.
